The Sacred Choice — Honouring Your Drum Before You Create It

There’s something sacred in the moment a person hears the quiet call to walk with a medicine drum.
It begins in the heart, a whisper, a pull, a vision.

And in that moment, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement, to book the first workshop that appears or order a drum without pause.
But before you take that step, I invite you to ask yourself:

Who am I entrusting with this ceremony?

Because creating a medicine drum is more than a craft.
It’s a ceremony. A remembering. An initiation.
A sacred act of devotion between you, the spirit of the drum, and the person who holds the space for its birth.

I've witnessed the other side...

There have been times where a person has brought me their drum, a drum they made in a space that didn't feel safe or honouring — and the drum itself held that energy.
Disconnected. Unsettled. Something missing.

One woman shared her story with me and it brought tears to my eyes.
She was insulted, shamed, and left energetically wounded during what should have been a sacred ceremony. The drum itself —oversized at the center, difficult to hold, became a reminder of pain rather than a vessel of healing.

That’s not what a medicine drum should carry.

This is more than making something beautiful...

When you create a drum, you’re unraveling and reweaving yourself.
You’re stepping into something ceremonial, something ancestral.
And the facilitator is not just a guide; they become a sacred witness.

Their role is to hold space, not push a process.
To see you, not sell to you.
To honour your unfolding with patience, reverence, and integrity.

Before You Step In, Ask Yourself:

  • Do I feel emotionally and energetically safe with this person?

  • Are they in this work for passion and purpose, or just to fill seats?

  • Have I seen their past creations, do they feel alive, intentional, sacred?

  • Are they willing to say “no” if the alignment isn’t right?

  • Will I walk away with a memory that lives in my bones with joy?

You don’t have to become best friends with the person you create your drum with,
but you will carry the memory of their energy in your drum.
Forever.

A story from my own path...

When I first felt the calling to make a drum, it came like a whisper.
It planted itself in my chest and grew quietly until one day, a workshop appeared.

I reached out. It was full.
So, I waited.

A year later, the call returned, stronger.
I searched through old emails, found the facilitator again, and this time, the reply was:
"Today’s your lucky day, there’s one spot left."

And it was magic.
I was safe. I was seen. The memory is woven into every fiber of that drum.

That’s the feeling I want everyone to have, whether or not you choose to sit with me.

A gentle offering...

I’m always happy to have a conversation, even if you’re unsure if I’m the right one to create with.
Sometimes, just speaking it out loud helps.

I’m also open to sharing the names of other facilitators I trust or have sat with myself.
Because what matters most is you feeling seen and safe.
This isn’t about convincing, it’s about honouring.

When you’re ready… trust your body, your knowing, and your heart.
Your medicine drum will remember how it was made.
Let it carry love.

May these words find you where you are, and may they remind you to listen, breathe, and come home to your own sound.
